Manufacture Distribution and Trade
The impact of manufacturing on our social and economic well-being should not be underestimated. The majority of Queensland’s 11,000 manufacturing businesses are classified as small, with 87% employing fewer than five people. Despite this, Queensland has seen its manufacturing sector’s share of national manufacturing output increase through the 1990’s. The State's manufacturing activities are dominated by food and beverage production (which accounted for 25% of 1999-00 manufacturing output or $2.4 billion), followed by metal products ($1.92 billion) and machinery and equipment manufacturing ($1.34 billion). A major area for potential further expansion is in export markets, as only 2% of Queensland’s manufacturing businesses have so far realised their export potential. However, there is no lack of competition facing Queensland’s industries - whether from:
- overseas competition with substantially lower employment costs and newer technology;
- an increasingly complex regulatory, compliance and governance environment; or
- the impact of climate change and increasing energy costs on transport, logistics and supply chains.
Along with manufacturing industries, businesses which are engaged in general trade and industry are exposed to the pressures and challenges presented by globalisation, production costs, climate change and energy costs. These businesses are recognising that their survival depends on:
- exploration of export potential;
- grouping of industries, to share resources, know how, production systems and distribution networks;
- business intelligence, including seeking the correct advice to negotiate their way through complex agreements concerning Trade Practices, technology licensing, production outsourcing, supply chain strategies, risk management assessments, and growth through franchising or other brand leveraging.
