Copyright

What is copyright?

Copyright laws grant authors, artists and other creator’s protection for their literary and artistic creations, generally referred to as ‘works’. Copyright does not protect ideas. Rather, it protects the expression of ideas. In Australia, the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) protects all original literary works, dramatic works, musical works, artistic works, sound recordings and films broadcast by an Australian or first published in Australia.

Copyright is automatic upon the creation of a work. As a result, no registration is required. However, since so many things are protected by copyright, it is important you are sure of your position under the law before you deal with, create or publish any material that might be protected under the law.
